Thick Octavo, blue cloth boards with white-lined diamond pattern. White cover and spine titles over dark blue fields.

The only copy providing guidance to help readers deal with wartime rationing restrictions implemented during WWII, including alternatives to butter in some recipes. INSCRIBED & SIGNED on the second front free page, For / Mary Engelhart / with all good wishes / most cordially / Irma S. After 85 years-eight editions, 1,132 pages and 4,500 recipes-The Joy of Cooking is as important for a well-stocked cupboard as flour and sugar. Which is why each copy, like the text itself, feels personalized and special.

And why, even though the world is full of perfectly decent and functional How to Cook Everything, the Joy is the one that continues to get handed down, generation to generation. Bon Appetit, May 15, 2017. Binding rebound tight and square.

Original full-bound cloth patterend boards present exceptionally well with bright panels and no stains. Light edge-wear and rubbing to corners with a very faint bump to top front edge. A bit of wear to head and foot fo spine. No apparent fading and only mild age-toning to edges. Test blocks about clean with only moderate area of soiling to bottom fore-edge lightly impacting page edges.

A few tiny tears to edges and folds to corners. Several index pages heavily repaired with tape. Original Dust Jacket presents fairly well with bold original color to front panel and only light tanning to rear. Moderate wear to rear and top-front edges, heavier to bottom -front edges with chipping and some loss. Moderate to heavy wear to hinges and creases with a few closed and very small open tears. Light chipping to foot of spine with heavy loss to head, about one-inch from head extending across about one-half of front and rear top edges. Flaps about clean with creasing to rear-top fore-edge. As one of the most influential Chefs in culinary history, Rombauer can comfortably be included on the list of the best, including Gordon James Ramsay, Joel Robuchon, Auguste Escoffier, Alain Ducasse, Anthony Bourdain, Thomas Keller, Ferran Adria, Marco Pierre White, Heston Blumenthal, Pierre Gagnaire, Rene Redzepi, David Chang, Yoshihiro Murata, Nobu Matsuchisa, Fernand Point, Alexis Soyer, Joan Roca I Fontane, Daniel Boulud, Charlie Trotter, Jean-Louis Palladin, Martin Berasategui, Dan Barber, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Michel Bras, Daniel Humm, Gason Acurio, Adolphe Duglere, Charles Ranhofer, Carme Ruscalleda, Mario Batali, John Besh, and Raymond Oliver.
