Longfield Hospice provides free care, 365 days a year for adults in Gloucestershire living with a life-limiting illness and support for their loved ones and carers. Mrs D The Life of Anne Damer 1748 - 1828 By Richard Webb Signed Hardback VGC. Mrs D The Life of Anne Damer 1748 - 1828 Born 1748 to a life of luxury, Anne Conway was subjected to an arranged marriage, in 1767, to a husband she neither knew nor liked.
Without him, she enjoyed the high life and with Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire became one of the It girls of swinging London 1775. As the age of revolution gathered pace, Anne's husband John Damer went bankrupt, and committed suicide. She modelled friends and family, their animals, and public heroes including Admiral Nelson. Living through a further half century of revolution, she mixed sculpture, with acting, writing, and travel.
Her friends included leading members of the political, arts and theatre world. Her descriptions of people, travel and life in differing countries of revolutionary Europe are fascinating. Nelson gave her his coat, Napoleon, a diamond encrusted portrait of himself.
She formed a triangular friendship with her godfather Horace Walpole and his protegee Mary Berry. Mrs D is the abbreviation by which Anne Damer is frequently described in their letters to each other.Horace left Anne his famous house, Strawberry Hill in Twickenham, and gave Mary and her family the house next door. We help people to understand and manage their illness, to cope with its impact on their lives, as well as supporting them to live well. Importantly, we support family and carers too.
We provide a Hospice at Home service, enabling people in the last three months of life to stay at home if that is their choice. Our services also include help for families to deal effectively with their grief, and education for other professionals who are looking after people at the end of life. We sum up the benefits of what we offer as'Living well; Dying well; Caring well'. All of Longfield's services are free and most are provided at our beautiful Wellbeing Centre in Minchinhampton. Some, including Wellbeing Workshops, Fatigue & Breathlessness and Bereavement Groups, are increasingly being offered at community venues, closer to where people live.
Currently, 85% of the charity's income comes from the general public, through our shops, our e-commerce marketplaces, our weekly lottery, voluntary donations, gifts in Wills and a host of fundraising events and activities.
