Listed at number 49 in the BBC's 2003 survey into the British public's best-loved novels (just behind Animal Farm, A Christmas Carol and Far From the Madding Crowd). Goodnight Mister Tom was first published in 1981 by Kestrel Books, in a small print run of as few as 500 copies. It was reprinted in hardback by Kestrel a handful of times, before Puffin issued it in paperback. Set during World War II, it features a boy abused at home in London who is evacuated to the country at the outbreak of the war.

In the care of Mister Tom, an elderly recluse, he experiences a new life of loving and care. Winner of many awards, including The Guardian Fiction Award of 1982 and the International Reading Association Award 1982. Adapted as a stage musical and as a film starring John Thaw.
