De New York Times noemde haar in 2010 misschien wel de beste boekontwerper van deze tijd. De aanleiding voor dat statement vormde het dat jaar verschenen miniboekje Biography in Books met een overzicht van haar boekontwerpen. Deze monografie was snel uitverkocht en kreeg, mede door het formaat (38 x 50 mm) en de algehele boekverzorging, een welhaast legendarische status. Naar aanleiding van de expositie Irma Boom: lArchitecture du livre 20131986 in het Institut Néerlandais in Parijs, van 17 september t/m 15 december 2013 bracht Uitgeverij Lecturis in samenwerking met de Bijzondere Collecties van de Universiteit van Amsterdam een aanzienlijk herziene en aangevulde herdruk uit. In Irma Boom: The Architecture of the Book zijn naast boeken ook onder meer huisstijlen, postzegels en affiches te zien. Het bevat een nieuwe inleiding door Rem Koolhaas, die ook het letter type op de cover heeft ontworpen.
Door het enorme formaat toont de XXL-uitgave ook al hetgeen in het miniatuurboekje verborgen blijft en daarmee het specifieke van de ontwerpen. Meer nog dan de details is dat een imponerend scala van eigenzinnige, sterke en consequent doorgevoerde ontwerpkeuzen. Opgenomen in beide uitgaven is ook een specimen uit een onlangs voor Chanel ontworpen boek dat geheel in preegdruk werd uitgevoerd.

The comment was prompted by the publication in that year of a miniature book Biography in Books featuring an overview of her book designs. Coinciding with the exhibition Irma Boom: lArchitecture du livre 20131986 at the Institut Néerlandais in Paris, from 17 September to 15 December 2013, Lecturis Publishing and The Special Collections department of the University of Amsterdam are publishing a significantly revised and updated reprint of the Irma Boom monograph. It includes a new introduction by Rem Koolhaas, who also designed the type font on the cover. Thanks to its huge format, the XXL edition also shows what remains hidden in the miniature book, revealing the specific elements of the design. More than just the details alone, this shows an impressive range of individual, confident and consistently applied design choices. Both editions also include a specimen from a book recently designed for Chanel, the pages of which are blind embossed throughout. In the miniature book, the images consist of just a few points, in the XXL edition, there are hundreds.
