With a laid-in 1945 postcard about this book from the translator, American poet Jean Starr Untermeyer. Supplied for appearance and protection. A philosophical novel that is one of the great works of 20th century modernism. Untermeyer's acclaimed translation from German was the product of a close collaboration with Broch to retain the spirit of his intricate, lyrical prose. The handwritten card from her was postmarked in March 1945 and addressed to NY literary agent Toni Strassman.

It reads, in part: The Death of Virgil will be out in mid-April. Do read it - JSU.

Actual publication was in June 1945, simultaneously in this translation and in German as Der Tod des Vergil. Thick hardcover in orange and black cloth. Including a brief "Translator's Note" by Untermeyer. VG with only light wear, some marks to the cloth. No owner signatures or bookplates.

Facsimile jacket is in new condition and protected by a clear archival cover. A solid, well-preserved example of the original 1945 1st edition. Attractive both in and out of the jacket designed by E. McKnight Kauffer and further enhanced by Untermeyer's personal note from the year of publication.
