This important groundbreaking book was one of the first male nude fine art publications to be produced by a mainstream publisher. " Facing Up " was also one of the first male photography books dealing with the subject matter of documenting the New York sexual underground of the pre-AIDS era. Many of the images have become classics of the genre, and have inspired a future generation of photographers. This limited edition contains an original copy of the 1980 publication, bound in rich black cloth boards, and housed in a specially designed cloth folio. The original cover image is a tipped-in gelatin silver print mounted on the front cover of the signed limited edition book.
This traveling exhibition featured over 130 photographs tracing Arthur Tress' career from his early documentary work to his most recent experiments in staged and manipulated imagery. Autobiographical in form, the exhibition emphasized Tress' singular language of surrealism, humor, eroticism and social protest. Arthur Tress is an influential and prolific photographer whose career spans nearly half a century.
He is noted for helping to bridge the gap between documentary and surrealistic photography. Tress was born in New York in 1940 and educated in Fine Arts at Bard College. He started photographing in 1963 while traveling in Mexico, Japan, India and Europe. He now lives and works in Cambria, CA.The work of Arthur Tress is characterized by allegorical wit, narrative poignancy and the interplay of objects and people.
